Even the most ordinary task becomes difficult in conditions of microgravity. Cracking an egg and separating it from the shell relies on gravity and could not be done on the ISS. The eggshell separator relies on centripetal force - which can be used in microgravity - to separate the egg from the shell. The egg is cracked and placed in the inner cylinder. The separator is then placed in a hand or electric drill by its stem and spun. The liquid egg will move through the holes in the inner cylinder to the outer cylinder and the shell will stay in the inner cylinder. This amazing invention will allow for the preparation of important foods like chocolate chip cookies that will keep astronauts happy and remind them of home.
