In the Mars Medical project, we needed to create a 3D printable object that could be brought into space to help the astronauts medical needs. My design was a scalpel. It has extra ridges to improve grip on it and it is to be printed out of stainless steel. It will be used for surgery aboard the ship. Because the metal is heated to a point where it is a liquid in order for it to print, the blade should be sanitary after being printed. Being able to have a new scalpel anytime reduces the need for washing and sanitizing previous scalpels, which saves precious water that the astronauts need. Being able to print any amount of this essential item saves lots of space by eliminating having to bring up individual knives. If someone really wanted to, they could also use this knife for food care, along with other cutting purposes. A printable knife is essential to space travel.
